Congress, Please Convince President Bush to Pardon Border Patrol Agents Ramos and Compean

Updated December 5, 2007

The Senate Committee on the Judiciary heard testimony on the prosecution of Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean on July 17, 2007. Click here to view a webcast of the hearing.

The sentencing of Border Patrol Agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean to prison for 11 and 12 years, respectively, for their attempted arrest of a drug dealer on the U.S./Mexico border is a terrible travesty of justice. Rep. Tom Tancredo's House Concurrent Resolution 37 (H. Con. Res. 37) is an effort to put Congressional pressure on President Bush to pardon these brave agents. The resolution concludes with these words:

"Resolved by the House of Representatives (the Senate concurring), That it is the sense of Congress that the President should swiftly and unconditionally pardon agents Ramos and Compean."

The New American and The John Birch Society have been in the forefront of this effort over the past year. Although the major media have largely ignored this story, over the past several months talk-radio and numerous Internet sites have made this a VERY HOT topic. Congress and the White House are under heavy pressure to right this wrong. Now is the time to pour it on. People are rightfully and righteously angry when they learn about what has happened to these agents (For more information, see "Punished for Doing Their Job," in the February 19, 2007 issue of The New American). On top of everything else, agent Ramos was severely beaten up by prison inmates shortly after his incarceration.

In an encouraging development, an appeals court judge has stated that federal prosecutors may have overreacted in their case against the Border Patrol agents. Another appeals court judge indicated that the judge presiding over the trial failed to properly instruct the jury, and allowed certain evidence to be withheld, which would have supported the defense of Ramos and Compean.

Show your friends and associates what they can do to help get a pardon for Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean by forwarding this action alert to them.

• We ask that you immediately contact your congressman and ask him or her to support Representative Tancredo's pardon resolution, H. Con. Res. 37. See editable message under "Take Action."
• We ask you to urge your senators to support a similar resolution in the Senate. See editable message under "Take Action."

Take Action!

As all of you know, our nation has an illegal immigration crisis.

We all gained some hope last summer when a firestorm of protest from the American public derailed the Bush-Kennedy amnesty bill in the Senate.

However, Congress is back at work trying to lull us to sleep by dressing up halfway measures to give the appearance of trying to control illegal immigration. One example of this is the SAVE Act of 2007 (H.R. 4088 in the House and S. 2366 and 2368 in the Senate).

The problem with the SAVE Act and similar immigration control measures is that they are based on tweaking our existing immigration laws in a way that makes it appear that Congress is working hard to solve the illegal immigration problem. However, the real problem is that Congress has allowed the executive branch to refuse to enforce our existing immigration laws for the past couple decades. How will this change if Congress passes a new immigration law that simply fine tunes our current immigration laws?

On the contrary, Congress must earn our confidence in their stated intention of tackling the illegal immigration problem by including in their bills the following four essential measures in addition to the necessary steps of physically securing the border, enforcing visa rules, verifying citizenship status for employment, ending welfare for illegal immigrants, etc:

  1. End birthright citizenship for children born to illegal immigrants in the U.S., thereby eliminating one of the primary incentives for illegal immigration into the U.S.;

  2. Block the North American Union (NAU) by defunding and dismantling the Security and Prosperity Partnership and all other government programs that are being used in the process of creating an open borders NAU merger of the U.S., Mexico, and Canada;

  3. Repeal NAFTA, the legal platform upon which the open borders NAU merger process is being developed; and

  4. Establish a moratorium on the consideration of any legislation regarding amnesty (legalization of status in any form) for illegal immigrants and temporary worker (or guest worker) programs until both the President and Congress can certify that illegal immigration has been brought under control for several consecutive years.

Bottom line: The key to solving the immigration crisis is to get Congress to block the NAU and repeal NAFTA. The key to getting Congress to block the NAU and repeal NAFTA is to continue increasing the American public’s awareness of the NAU by distributing a million or more copies of the NAU issue of The New American to opinion molders.

As you can see from the dual thermometer graphic from JBS.org at the top right of this message, our campaign to distribute a million copies of the NAU issue of The New American is nearing the halfway mark in issues distributed to opinion molders at 450,000, and is well over the halfway mark in dollars raised at $650,000.

Based on the donations already in hand, we are planning to mail an additional 200,000 issues in January.

This is where you come in. We know it’s December and you have many gift obligations as well as political campaign demands. However, if 1,000 of you would donate an average of $50 each, we would be able to send an additional 50,000 issues in January.

The illegal immigration crisis is real. Congress is ignoring the role of the NAU and NAFTA in this crisis. You can make a difference by helping to inform tens of thousands of opinion molders about the NAU’s role in illegal immigration.

I believe in this million copy distribution project so thoroughly that I’ve already donated substantial sums from my life's savings to it.

I don’t expect you to follow my example, but please consider making a donation of at least $50 or $100 today. Click here to donate.

Sincerely,
